Oh, beautiful for spacious skies

Skies that are colored gray, not like that of a dead channel, but from rain trying in vain to wash away the grime and evil of the streets below.

For amber waves of grain

Grain used to make “food” to feed America’s 430+ million people; and of course, the fatcats still get the first — and sometimes the only — mouthfuls.

For purple mountains’ majesties

That the average person will never get to see, because they’re too busy with their noses to the grindstone, pleasing their corporate masters. If the skies were even clear enough, that is.

Above the fruited plain

At least those plains that haven’t been devastated by the worsening weather events brought on by climate change.

America, America

No longer exists in a recognizable form, ever since becoming a mere fascist shell of itself under the boot heel of an ascendant China.

God shed his grace on thee

The gods now live above the masses in their mighty towers of polycarbon and glass, imposing their will through tyrannical (and compliant) politicians and legions of armored federal agents.

And crown thy good with brotherhood

There’s very little good in the world anymore and “brotherhood” is a joke. There is only destroy or be destroyed, succeed or fail...and the system is rigged to make you fail.

From sea to shining sea

Which (also thanks to climate change) comes a little closer every year, flooding once-habitable land.

New World is a cyberpunk campaign framework based on the Traveller SRD (which is itself based on The Original Science Fiction Roleplaying Game published in the 1970s) and the Cepheus Engine SRD. Set in the middle of the 21st century in an America rendered almost unrecognizable by past events, the campaign features many of the tropes commonly expected in a cyberpunk world, along with some developed expecially for New World:

  • A timeline based on and extrapolated from real-life events
  • A familiar lifepath character generation system
  • A generous selection of cybernetic modifications, mundane equipment, and vehicles
  • Simplified rules for computer use and cyber-combat
  • A discussion of mid-21st century American life and culture, including a glossary of slang terms
  • A look at the changes wrought on America and the rest of the world
  • A system for mapping sections of the “Net (aka cyberspace)
  • A system for determining spontaneous radicalization, one of the worst scourges of the future age
  • And much, much more

It’s a new world, just around the corner. Welcome to the future, daoren…hope you survive it!

I want to like this, but it feels like it needs more polish. Right now it feels like the developer's notes rather than a complete book.

I noticed some errors in the origins of the Chinese-derived cyberpunk slang terms listed in the book. Specifically,
“Jay Chew” listed jiechu(联系) as its origin, but the pinyin of these two characters actually is "lianxi",jiechu will be writen in chinese as "接触". And neither 联系 nor 接触 means contact or associate(The corresponding terms are 关系 or 熟人)。
“Johnny” listed jian ren (线) as its origin, but the pinyin of that character actually is "xian",“jian ren” seems to me a misspelled version of xianren(线人). Xianren does mean a snitch or informant, but doesn't carry a derogatory meaning(that will be 内鬼).

If you're open to it, I would be happy to suggest some alternatives:
The origin of “Jay Chew” can be zhongjie(中介),“broker”
The origin of “Johnny” can be jubao(举报),“report to authorities”. That "jubao" also regularly carry a negative connotation...See more

Thanks for the feedback. As a non-Chinese speaker, I had to depend on Google Translate. I knew that might be asking for it, but I wanted to use something more unique than just the same old Cyberpunk slang that every other work uses.

I'd like to incorporate your suggestions in the next edition of the book, but (in the interest of truthfulness) it'll be a while until I get around to upgrading it. Rest assured that it's now in the queue, however, and will include your suggestions. Thanks again.

Is this a standalone product? Is everything I need to play inside this book, or will I need to acquire Cephus/Traveller and reference those as well?

It's based on Cepheus Engine, which is itself based on Traveller. You will need one or the other, but there's a free version of the CE SRD online and here on DTRPG, and an online version of the Traveller SRD. Of course, if you have a different system you'd like to use, much of the background can be used without much tinkering.

How well do the interior illustrations of the book work in B&W as opposed to color? Trying to figure out which one I want to order if I go for hardcopy.

Intriguing! Can someone give me more details on chargen, cyber and weapon stuff before the Deal of the Day ends?

In a nutshell, it uses a chargen based on Cepheus Engine, which is itself based on Traveller. However, the Referee has great leeway to impose whatever type of chargen works best for the campaign. Weapons are highly genericized (listed simply as Auto Pistol, Revolver, or Submachine Gun, for example), which allows the Referee to introduce branding of whatever cyberpunk world (s)he runs. Cyberware is intended to be simple, and work with the particulars of the CE/Trav system.

Is there a plan for a pod print product? Will definitely be purchasing, but I'd like to buy print and pdf at the same time.

There is. In fact, I'm waiting for the print proof, but I don't have a firm ETA on it.

Good news! The proof arrived sooner than I expected and I've approved it for POD production. Enjoy!

It says it uses the Traveller SRD and is used with the Cepheus SRD. I'm not clear if that means you can use New World with either one or if you need to use rules from both SRDs at once

The Cepheus SRD is a direct descendant of the online Traveller SRD. Although New World is written for Cepheus, the two systems are similar enough that you can use either or even blend elements that you like from both.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
