100 Strange Sights to See in The Hedge

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Hedge is the barrier between Arcadia, and the world we think of as reality. It is, in a very real sense, the only thing that separates us from the True Fae. And while cultures throughout history have tales of strange realms and bizarre places that try to explain what the Hedge is, words cannot truly do it justice. Because the Hedge is a place that operates on its own rules, its own logic, and which is possessed of both spite and generosity in equal measure.

In other words, making the Hedge feel like a living, breathing, fantastical place means that a storyteller has their work cut out for them. But if you want to capture the surreal nature of this bizarre world between worlds (while also keeping your players on their toes as they try to tip toe through the brambles), then this list has all sorts of sights for you to show them!

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Leading off the trod is a wooden gate. The gate isn't attached to a fence or barrier of any sort, but hanging from it is a sign that says Please close the gate behind you. The gate is slightly ajar, as if whoever last went through it didn't properly close it. Anyone who closes and latches the gate finds a letter waiting for them in their dreams. It's on plain, white paper, and sealed with pale wax, worked with a set of scales. It thanks them for their kindness, and tells them that as they shut his gate, so too has the letter's sender shut theirs. The changeling now has a "dream gate" which acts as the Danger Sense merit whenever they are in their own dreams. If an individual already has this merit, then the dream gate provides an extra +1 bonus die.
  • A figure is drawn on a tree in chalk, an iron nail driven halfway into its heart, and a circle of salt is spread around the trunk. The figure is roughly humanoid, though the arms are far too long, and the fingers end in wicked claws. Written below the drawing are the words King of Beasts, Master of the Hunt, Lord of The Kill, I bid thee keep thyself from my trail. Those who make an Intelligence + Occult roll at Difficulty 8 recognize this as a binding ritual to keep the subject away from the caster. Three successes allows one to realize the target is a True Fae. Five successes allows one to interpret the ritual, and to understand that while it isn't completely successful, it does seem to be having a partial effect. Those who drive the nail deeper hear a roar of rage and pain echoing from somewhere deep in the Thorns, rolling over the entire Hedge. Those who remove the nail hear the blast of a hunting horn, as the last link binding the Beast King is now broken. If the changelings come across this member of the Gentry they might be able to beg a boon from it as per the merit Faerie Favor... but was it worth the cost?
  • A fireplace stands in a clearing, complete with a mantle, chimney, throw rugs and wing-backed chairs. A scrimshawed skull sits on the mantle, and next to it is a sign that reads Stay awhile, and share a story. Those who sit and tell a tale feel as if there is some unseen presence listening to them. Those who tell a story must make a Presence + Expression or Manipulation + Expression roll at Difficulty 8. Once success earns the teller a point of glamour, as if in thanks. Two successes earns a point of glamour, as well as removing any bashing damage the teller is suffering from. Five or more successes also restores a point of spent Willpower. If the tale teller hasn't spent any Willpower then they gain a floating, phantom point of Willpower that adds +1 to all Resolve + Composure rolls, and can be spent the same as normal Willpower. This phantom point lasts for 24 hours, or until they next leave the Hedge, whichever comes first.
  • A gallery of bizarre art hangs among the branches of the Hedge. Stained glass mobiles that depict a taking, and an escape, spin slowly in a light breeze. Paintings that seem to move and change when one looks away are held delicately at perfect viewing height. Sculptures of men and women with glimmering veins of crystal seem almost real until one touches them and feels the hard stone beneath their hand. Whether left by a reclusive changeling, created by a talented hob or crafted by the hand of the Gentry, it's impossible to truly say who the artist is... or was. Those who visit this gallery more than once find that the art on display does change over time. Those who damage the artwork find that the gallery grows hostile, and the Hedge pulls the treasures away, secreting them deep within itself. The Hedge refuses to heed those who are disrespectful of the gallery, imposing a -2 die penalty on all pools to navigate the Hedge until one either makes an apologetic offering of their own art, or a year and a day has passed since the incident.
  • A four-post bed sits in a small clearing with the bed curtains pulled. A soft carpet of moss surrounds the bed, and a nightstand covered in chips and scratches has a half-full glass of water sitting on top of it. Only someone truly mad would lay down to sleep in the middle of the Hedge... but there's no shortage of madness among the fae. Those who look under the bed find small, hopping puffs of dust in the shape of rabbits. The bed itself is empty, and if one lays down in it the curtains close of their own volition and sleep comes quickly to them. A Resolve + Stamina roll at Difficulty 8 is required to stay awake in this instance. 2 successes means one stays awake for several minutes. 3 successes allows one to stay awake for 15 minutes. 4 or more successes allows one to shake off the need to sleep. Those who do sleep in the bower heal 1 level of aggravated damage, or two levels of lethal damage if they had no aggravated damage. However, without someone standing guard over them while they sleep it's likely something will come along and ensure they never wake again.

I've checked the preview, and I can't see any distorted text. Can you provide any more details?

It was full of strange symbols and looked creased. Tried it again and it looks normal. Odd. It's the same browser and I didn't do anything differently.

please add keywords to each entry as well as more space between texts. it's difficult to read. also creates a real and detailled table of contents

I'm not sure what the keywords would be and truthfully that might be rather difficult. Regarding the layout, I've been tinkering with the format trying to make it more readable; the original template version was not good. It's better than it was, but it might be possible to improve it more. A detailed table of contents is tricky really; there are only a handful of entries; story, introduction, table, related supplements, links.

Really, it's supposed to be on Storytellers Vault, though you can find supplements on any of the sites in the network. I don't know why it's having problems (and I suspect the problems would still exist on this site; it's the same backend and would be the same discount code). You can change the URL and it should probably work. If it doesn't, well, I'll have to tell DriveThru, because it's likely a problem with their side. If you can't get it to work, I'll contact them and it would likely help if you did the same.

It's definitely a problem with DriveThru.. well something between the other site and DriveThru. I managed to log in to the website, and it would apply the discount IN THE CART, but on the webpage on that site, the discount was not there. Furthermore, the same item in the cart on DriveThru has the NON-sale price, even after it's been added from the other site with the discount. In FACT, it irritated me so bad that I deleted it out of the cart, purchased my stuff on DriveThru, then went BACK to the other site.. and it was still in the cart. :O :O :O

There is most defintiely.. a flaw in the slaw!

Would you mind sending a message to DriveThru explaining the problem please? I can do that as well, but I know they often like to talk to those experiencing the problem directly too.

Sure! Might want to check that the problem isn't in the config on the other site as well, though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
