Dungeon Crawl Classics: Empire of the East

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Officially licensed by the estate of Fred Saberhagen, this sourcebook offers everything you need to play DCC RPG campaigns in the world of the Empire of the East.

Thousands of years ago, the ashes of nuclear fire changed the world. The weapons of mass destruction ceased to work as the laws of physics altered. In their wake came elementals and demons, creatures from the darkest dreams and nightmares of mankind. Magic returned to the world. Humankind arose from the ashes and rebuilt society, just as the vile Empire of the East wielded the demonic powers of Orcus to sweep across the globe. Now it falls to a small group of resistance fighters to reclaim freedom for humanity!

Inside you will find:

  • Rules for magic tailored to the post-apocalyptic fantasy setting of the Changeling Earth, including new spells and summonings to enrich any DCC campaign
  • Character options for adventuring in this world
  • A discussion of demons, elementals, and monsters, including stats for creatures compatible with any DCC and MCC campaign
  • Lost technology of the Golden Age of Man, and its effect on the Changeling Earth
  • Statistics for all of the major characters from the trilogy, also usable as NPCs in any DCC or MCC campaign
  • Two short low-level adventures to start your campaign
  • And more!

Using this sourcebook requires the DCC RPG core rulebook. While this sourcebook contains all you need to play a campaign, Saberhagen’s novels are an invaluable resource in understanding the setting. We highly recommend you also read the Saberhagen Empire of the East series, available as a modern compilation or in the original three individual volumes, titled The Broken LandsThe Black Mountains, and Ardneh’s World (also published as Changeling Earth).

Just got the second printing and I am much happier. There's a few more pages of content but these pages do bring it all together quite nicely. There are a few more things I would add such as:
Orcus (Patron)

Giant Centepedes (Encountered when Chup does Charmian's quest to put the hair circlet in Som the Dead's treasure hoard.)

Beastmen and spectral/insubstantial humanoids (Encountered when Charmian is summoned to Som the Dead's chambers after Chup's quest.) "On her walk deep into the citadel she was bowed on and escorted by a series of the viceroy's attendants, some of whom were human. Others were more beastlike or more magical than men, and had shapes not commonly encountered away from the black mountains."

There's a couple of good opportunities missed for enemies/monsters to be added to give the readers more content. Plus, thicker books are always more pleasing to the eye.

All in all, I would say this is a definite buy, especially if they keep...See more

If we have this PDF will the file be updated with the additional 8 pages of material that are apparently included with the 2nd printing of the physical book?

Not for fans because the book is pretty much a summary of the books making the info redundant minus the stat blocks. Not for newcomers because of spoilers. If you buy this, I suggest you stow it somewhere and read all of the books first and then come back to this where you will find the stat blocks you may need to play this setting.

The art is really good and the content is interesting. It's basically Numenera+Fallout+Evil Dead III Army of Darkness minus the comedy=Radioactive Demons in a medieval setting. I would let on like my players are in a standard medieval setting until they come upon a buried skyscraper or something and I would make demons rare. The two adventures in the book are too similar and one is really weak imo. A lot of potential for this setting but with Mutant Crawl Classics, Umerica, Dying Earth and other things like it from DCC it does seem a bit samey.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
