THE GRINDHOUSE: VOLUME 1

grindhouse [grahynd-hous] n. – A grindhouse or action house is an American slang term for a theatre that mainly shows low-budget horror, splatter and exploitation films for adults.

These aren’t your typical Call of Cthulhu scenarios where some classy, well-dressed investigator sips tea and pours over leather books in some wood paneled library.
These are burning dumpsters of pure horror where a fleeing private investigator limps through some filthy back alley on a busted ankle while a howling pack of mutants try to beat them to death with the limbs of their dead friends.
In other words, these are not for the faint of heart, and are intended for mature audiences only. Player discretion is advised.

FRIDAY NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE!

The Crimson King
This scenario takes place in the early 1980s. The characters have been invited to an exclusive nightclub that features early goth music with industrial and punk influences. Illicit drugs and overt sexuality are ubiquitous with the underground nightclubs of the time, and by all accounts The Court of the Crimson King is no exception.

Isle of the Damned
Set on a small island off the coast of Maine, this scenario takes place in the summer of 1974. A group of friends have rented a small vacation house with the intent of spending a week fishing, drinking, and maybe smoking a little weed. Things begin to go sideways when they hear a noise from beneath the cabin that leads them to a hidden door. What lies beyond will change their lives forever.

Why include trigger warnings in a book about grindhouse? You know what you're getting into when you've got the word grindhouse in a title. Also, the rule about no r*pe? This proves that the author has no idea what grindhouse is, as 90% of the movies in the genre contain it. I'm honestly a little disappointed. Not that r*pe is integral to anything, but if you are going to omit things that are part and parcel of a genre, why name the thing after the genre in the first place?

We appreciate your feedback! Many people don't know what grindhouse is all about, so that's why we have the warning. It also fits the genre. After all, how many grindhouse movies used gimmicks like barf bags and warning for people with bad hearts. It's all part of the experience. Regarding sexual assault, I thought it would be obvious, and the fact that you were aware enough to spell it with an asterisk says that you know it too. I'm perfectly fine eliminating that particular trope if it means more people get to have fun playing my scenarios.

Actually, I self-censored not because of others' sensibilities, but because of platform rules.

There's nothing wrong with self-censoring. After all, why would I want to intentionally harm another? I guess it's good that the platform has the rules.

Are the character sheets at the end of the scenarios premade characters for the players or should they be making their own?

They are intended to be pre-generated characters for the players, though they were kept simple so that players could customize them with little effort. Then again, there's no reason a Keeper couldn't use them as NPCs. :)

They are made for use with the scenario, but you can definitely make your own or use existing characters assuming they fit the 80s and 70s respectively.

Okay cool, I just noticed that it talked about the possibility of the investigators being law enforcement and wasn't sure. Either way, love this and Highway of Blood and can't wait to run it soon

This would be a nice little couple of adventures, with some violent approach as promised and a set of pre-gen characters to die in amusingly horrible ways... if not for a rather witless comment: so they have a 4 000 yrs. old vampire as the Big Bad. Great: some enemies are to overcome, others one needs to escape from.
But why the allusion to da Vinci and why the utterly useless, unnecessarily comment about religion?
"Throughout the millennia, he has taken on many identities and faces, including a reclusive alchemist, an Egyptian priest, a murderous tyrant, and a rabbinical prophet from Nazareth."
Oh, really? How witty and daring of you!

"...and a rabbinical prophet from Nazareth." (from the description of the "Crimson King").
Where I come from rabbies, prophets and the man from Nazareth are religious figures.

Fair enough. It's more of a reference to the origins of the vampire myths, many of which borrow heavily from Judeo-Christian mythology. The entire vampire concept of drinking blood was an oblique reference to the last supper, which itself borrowed from several Mediterranean myths that were popular at the time.

In any case, these scenarios are intended to be modified to fit the taste of the Keeper, so feel free to change his backstory to suit your preferences. We certainly appreciate the feedback.

The vampire is a copy/paste of Mr. Barlow from the book version of Salem's Lot.

I'm definitely a fan of the more gritty, brutal vampires rather than the more romantic style. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
