SWORD & SORCERY

Expanding on the material presented in By This Axe I Hack, the By This Axe Companion includes 12 new Character Classes (4 warriors, 4 rogues, and 4 magicians), 6 new backgrounds for each, 72 new spells designed for the sword and sorcery genre, and 26 new special features to make your Character unique, plus a host of new rules and options, including new combat rules, weapon rules, wealth rules, wilderness rules, runeblade powers, and a collection of relics and artifacts for GMs who want to incorporate magic items into their games.

Although designed primary to supplement By This Axe I Hack and other roleplaying games based on the Black Hack, most of the material in this book is relatively OSR compatible and should be easy to modify for use with any version of the world’s most popular fantasy roleplaying game.

Based on David Black’s game-changing The Black Hack, By This Axe I Hack takes its cues from Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian and Kull of Atlantis, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor Smith’s Red Sonja, Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melnibone, and Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

Hello. Would you guys help me boost my current Kickstarter? I'm putting together a third volume of monsters for Black Hack. I have two other volumes here on DriveThru. it's been a few years since I published those and hope to get some additional exposure via the current crop of Black Hackers. Thanks! :^)

Will there be a POD option for the Companion, as well?

Yes, working on that now. Will be a bit of a delay because ordering proofs right now takes a while, but we are working on it.

The goof where the body of the book was somehow repeated; the book should be 62, not 120.

Hi, it seems that the files for the Companion I downloaded repeat pp. 2-60. Other than that, really like them and By This Axe, and also like that they are printer friendly.

Wow. I have no idea how that happened, but thanks for letting me know. Both the black and white cover versions have been fixed. And thanks for the kind words!

Incredibly impressed with this gem! I picked up the core and companion on a whim during a boring business call, assuming it was just another OSR hack that would be more of the same, but I was very suprised with how well thought out it was! the feature point buy system is really a great touch and shows how much thought was put into this. I am definitly looking forward to anything else in the line, definite day one buys for me!

Thank you so much. Long story short, this comment came on a day when it was really needed, so thanks for taking the time to write it. :)

And thanks for your interest in the game!

Am I understanding correctly that this says Scholars can cast.... well, basically any spell? What is the purpose of them learning individual spells at all if they can cast any spell from a practice they have without penalty already?

Spells are broken down into known and unknown.

Casting known spells works one way. Overall, known spells are much more effective than unknown spells because, with known spells, (1) you get Advantage on the first casting per day, no modifier on the second casting per day, and Disadvantage on the third and subsequent casting per day, and (2) you can keep casting them until you fail a casting roll. Scholars get very few known spells despite being "full casters."

Casting unknown spells works a different way. Magicians can cast only 1 unknown spell per Level per day, regardless of success or failure. Also, (1) most magicians can only cast unknown spells that fall under one of their practices, and (2) they have disadvantage on their sorcery tests when casting unknown spells.

Here is where Scholars shine.

While Scholars can't cast unknown spells more often than other magicians, they get 2 benefits. First, they can cast unknowns spells from any practice...See more

A simple question: why, if you roll less than your stat to succeed, is a roll of 1 a critical failure and a roll of 20 a critical success?

A GREAT question: and the answer is, mainly, because while I can get behind the idea of "roll under" in general, my mind refuses to accept the notion of celebrating a 1 and mourning a 20. Mechanically, however, there is no reason not to swap it if you prefer.

In fact, I actually prefer playing using the Rolling High hack, the option in the back of the core book where you have to roll over a test value of 22 - stat, again because my brain likes high = good and low = bad. If you will notice the character sheet above has these little "T/V"s on it ... that's what they are for. You use the regular character sheet if you are using standard "roll under" or the one above if you are using the optional test values.

I hope this helps. Thanks for your question and for your interest in the game!

Instant buy. BTA is an amazing hack -- as appealing as Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells, TBH, Whitehack, or Macchiato Monsters. Everyone looking for S&S with short rules but a lot of options to exploit those rules should get BTA.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
